Places far & wide

Mont Routui - Moorea

Known as "Bali Hai" in the film South Pacific

The Ludendorf Bridge

These two towers, with their opposite numbers on the other bank, are all that remain of the bridge over the Rhine at Remagen, subject of the 1969 film.

The Golden Gate Bridge

San Francisco

The Treasury Building - Petra, Jordan

The Library Building

Ephesus - Turkey

Die Lorelie

The Lorelie rock protrudes 433 feet above the Rhine between Koblenz and Wiesbaden. It ais alleged to be a home to a siren calling mariners to their deaths in the fast flowing waters. These are pics of the Lorelie rock and the siren statue at its foot.

The Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal was attempted a number of times in antiquity but was completed in 1893 by the French.

Chitchen Itza

The great Mayan pyramid at  Chichen Itza is 98 feet high. I climbed it in 2009, shortly before climbing it was banned.

The Brandenburgh Gate, Berlin

Built on the orders of Frederick William II in 1788 this gate sits at the head of Unter Den Linden and, miracously, survived the second world war

The reason for including this pic is that the pics of places such as this in holiday brichures always show them as completely deserted. Fat chance!

Such pics must be taken about 5AM!

The Abbey Church at Durnstein, Wachau Valley, Austria

Originall built in 1410 & rebuilt in 1710, this is a spectacular church both inside & out. The Castle on the hill was where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned returning home from the Crusades. I have painted the exterior including the castle which can be seen on the painting pages.

The Frauenkirche, Dresden

Frauenkirche means "Church of Our Lady" but this was a Lutheran Protestant church built in the 18th century on the site of a previous Catholic church. The building was devastated by the allied bombing raids on Dresden in early 1945. The East German regime left the ruins as a memorial but it was restored from 1994 to 2005. The interior is a stunning design of pastel colours.

The Centennial Bridge over the Panama Canal at The Cut

The second major road bridge over the Panama Canal was opened in 2005

The Fountains at the Peterhof Palace, St Petersburg, & the interior of the Amber Room

The fountains only aperate for a limited time each day. We were fortunate to get such splendid weather. The Amber room pic is a scan of a postcard as private pics are not allowed in that room. The bulk of it was looted in the war but most of it was recovered and the end result is stunning.

Elaine in front of the 16 inch guns of the rear turret on USS Missouri moored in Battleship Row  in Pearl Harbour

Missouri is just up from the USS Arizona Memorial. The Japanese surrender was signed on the deck of USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay in 1945.

The Ioloni Palace

Hawaii

The Ioloni Palace was the homes of the Kings of Hawaii before the islands became a State of the USA

Other Stuff

Quokka

The Quokka is essentially a very small Kangaroo like animal, about the size of a Teddy Bear. We came upon them an an island out from Perth, Australia. They are rare and endangered.

On the island we stayed in an ex Aboriginal prison, now an hotel, and I had Skippy for dinner (which I repeated some years later in Sydney).

Did you know that if you order Kangaroo more than medium rare it becomes almost too tough to eat? I was happy with medium rare.

Family

My Son & Granddaughter

This pic was taken in the woods at Brackenborough Hall when Niamh was two years old.

Parents Wedding

This photograph of my parent's wedding , in 1933, is the earliest I have of them. My mother, Rose, died when I was 14, my father, Robert Edward (Ted) when I was 23.

My Siblings

This photograph shows my sister, Rosemary, with me and my younger brother Nicholas. It was probably taken around 1955
